Before looking at all the things to do on Women’s Day, let’s step back to remember why we celebrate it.
National Women’s Day is celebrated in South Africa annually on the 9th of August. It commemorates an important day in 1956 when a group of over 20,000 women of all races, marched to the prime minister (at the time, JG Strijdom), seated at the Union Building in Pretoria to present a petition against the carrying of passes by women.
You may not have the need for organising a mass march to celebrate Women’s Day this year but that doesn’t stop you grabbing a bunch of best friends for a fun day out. Have a look at our selection of great activities and things to do for Women’s Day on the Garden Route.
Lunch or Sunset Cruise
What better way to celebrate Women’s Day than with a glass of bubbly in hand! Springtide Sailing Charters offer lunch and sunset cruises on the Knysna lagoon. Put on your favourite cocktail dress and enjoy scrumptious snacks aboard an elegant, 50 ft monohull yacht while admiring the picturesque surroundings of the Knysna estuary and the unique, rugged Garden Route Coastline.
Horse Riding in the Forest
Hog Hollow Horse Trails offers a beautiful full day ride on horseback through fields, tea plantations, vineyards and forests with views over the Tsitsikamma Mountains. After the ride, your group will be treated to a deluxe picnic with select beverages to enjoy under the Oak Trees in the lush gardens or on the veranda in front of the fire on chilly days.
High Tea
Meade Cafe in George is known for serving the best High Teas on the Garden Route! All their ingredients are sourced locally, prepared with love, and served with passion in a setting that will soothe your senses. Enjoy a selection of cakes, scones and other delectable sweet treats accompanied by tea or coffee. And if you don’t all have a sweet tooth, try their famous tea tastings followed by lunch.
Wild Oats Market
Women’s Day is on a Friday this year, so why not make it a long weekend getaway with the girls! If you are spending the weekend on the Garden Route, the Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market in Sedgefield is a must visit. It has been running for more than 15 years and is open every Saturday morning throughout the year, come rain or shine. Visitors can expect to find all sorts of fresh, locally produced foods to enjoy both at the market and to take home.
Spa Day
Why not organise a pamper day this Women’s Day by booking a full or half day of treatments at the Forest Nature Spa in Plettenberg Bay. They can tailor-make packages depending on your group size and budget. Treatments are rotated as your special day together proceeds. Lunch platters will then be served within your own private suite to tuck into between spa treatments.
As women, we get so caught up with everyday life that we don’t always have, or make time to spend quality time with our closest friends. Friends are there to weather the ups and downs of life, provide a sounding board and help us grow through each year of our lives.
Take time out this Women’s Day to reconnect with your friends and to celebrate being women!
