When we think of the best beaches in South Africa, naturally Camps Bay beach comes to mind or the surfer’s paradise of South Beach in Durban.
Maybe we even think of the tranquil beaches of Paternoster on the West Coast but recently the secret hidden gem of Noetzie beach on the Garden Route has been ranked higher than all of these.
Travel site FlightNetwork recently ranked the top 50 beaches in the world in an article on “Express Digest” and you will be pleasantly surprised that Noetzie Beach just outside Knysna, Western Cape was the top ranked South African beach at #16 Worldwide just after Playa Norte in Mexico and before Balandra Beach, also in Mexico! Other beaches within the top 16 were the famous Navagio Beach in Greece and Maya Bay in Thailand which makes this a real accolade for the Western Cape.
Noetzie beach scored 10 points based on various different best beach indicators due to its untouched beauty and remote location.
It also scored an 8 for sand and water quality with an average of 277 sunshine days per year! That makes it a sun seekers paradise!

“Located down an exclusive gravel road, Noetzie Beach in South Africa is number 16 on the list. It is tucked into a hidden nook of Plettenberg Bay and rimmed by a dense forest. The beach scored a perfect 10 for both sheer untouched beauty and remoteness. It also scored eight for sand and water quality and has on average 277 of sunshine per year. Tour guide Rushdi Harper wrote: ‘A secluded beach located in one of South Africa’s most beautiful towns, Noetzie Beach is the perfect escape from a busy city.
